Bitcoin, Snapchat, And The Currency Mystery

The real mystery is when it happens, because current valuations don’t make any sense (to me, at least).

Bitcoin network: $3.4 billion valuation

Snapchat: $18 billion valuation

Twitch: $1 billion-ish

Hyper network: $148,000 valuation

Hyper is about to cross 250,000 views on Bitcointalk, so gamers out there are already beginning to adopt the technology. Is a revolutionary gaming network avec currency really only worth the cost of a modest home in the middle of nowhere?

And is the future of money really only worth a sixth of Snapchat?

Remember, more than 80 percent of Bitcoin trading is reportedly occurring in China. Bitcoin isn’t maybe the world’s first truly international currency. It is that.

The Bank of England, Citigroup, and the Federal Reserve have all issued papers, guidance, and opinions on Bitcoin. They haven’t (as far as I know) released similar papers on the technology behind Snapchat.

I’ve been phenomenally wrong about how long it will take for civilization to “get” cryptocurrency. It’s taking a while. Maybe it will take years.

But maybe not. Because Nasdaq is reportedly working on Bitcoin trading technology, the New York Stock Exchange is already invested in Coinbase, ChangeTip is increasingly the velociraptor that has learned to open doors, and spread Bitcoin far and wide onto Facebook newsfeed screens throughout the heartland.

All the smartest people agree cryptocurrency is a really big deal. Steve Jobs’ authorized biographer Walter Isaacson. Billionaires Richard Branson, Marc Andreessen, and even Bill Gates love the stuff.

I’m not one of the smartest or richest. But I think the smartest and richest are onto something here.

Cryptocurrency isn’t dying. It’s just starting to come to life. Here are a few useful links to get you started — welcome to the weird world of money without banks.
