January Letter 2.0

Dear Readers + Writers,

We’re sending this letter to you again, this time with the correct submission dates — February 1st through February 7th! Thank you for indulging my inability to properly decipher a calendar. May I present…

January Letter 2.0:

Made Up Wordsrecently celebrated the coveted publication milestone of 1,000 followers! Thank you for helping us prove that fiction — those works of the imagination that are, as Bruno Bettelheim once pointed out, unreal but never untrue — can be a meaningful part of your weekly reading.

You can always find the most recent stories featured at the top of our page, so make sure to visit in case you’ve missed anything. It’s been a joy for us to see the way that this month’s re-launch stories have resonated with you. A sprinkling of reader responses:

“It’s rare that you read a piece and feel like the emotions are physically hitting you…” — Cian O’Donnell

“I loved it. Every word.” — Solitary Cook

“Beyond brilliant.” — Don Cue

Stick with us through February, when you’ll find 13 stories reflecting our theme of “Love Lies Bleeding.” Meanwhile, if you’re a writer please read on and consider submitting your fiction now for our March publication!

We’re open for submissions February 1 — February 7

We are open for submissions from February 1st through February 7th. During that time, we are interested in all types of subject matter, but will take special note of work that reflects the theme of:

“Ring the bells that still can ring / Forget your perfect offering,” wrote the brilliant Leonard Cohen, “There is a crack in everything / That’s how the light gets in.”

As we begin to thaw out from Winter, we invite you to share your stories of renewal, hope, and light. Turn your thoughts to Spring — to the granting of unlikely wishes, to a rough start with a grand finish, or to a proverbial phoenix rising from the ashes. Please note that we’re working to diversify the voices you hear at Made Up Words. Women, people of color, LGBT-identified, and others who are marginalized by our culture are encouraged to submit their work.

Send us your best, and we promise — as always — to read every word. Our general submission guidelines apply, so please be sure to review them before sending your work our way. Questions? Email us: submissionstomadeupwords@gmail.com.

On behalf of the team at Made Up Words, thank you again for following, reading, and recommending!

Best,

Veronica Montes
