What are Bearbricks?

“Be@rbricks are just adult’s equivalent of Legos”, while this statement is somewhat true, there is one key difference, Bearbricks do not hurt your feet when stepped on, rather it will hurt you inside!

To those of you who are new to this, you might be wondering “What are Bearbricks?”. Well, they are a collectible toy designed by Medicom Toy. They were first introduced in 2001 as a gift for visitors of the World Character convention. Since then, Bearbricks have gone on to be one of the most recognizable pieces sought after by collectors all over the world.

Fun fact: Bearbricks were inspired by Kubricks, which is an earlier toy model line produced by Medicom Toy

Breakdown of Bearbrick Sizes

Bearbricks come in many different sizes, namely: 50%, 100%, 200%, 400% and 1000%. Yes, it might all seem a little daunting, especially if you are new to this. However, do not worry, I will break it all down for you right here.

The standard size of a Bearbrick is the 100% variant which stands at just about 7CM tall. All other models are measured relative to this variant.

50%

The smallest Bearbricks in the lineup, this model isn’t very common. Most often than not, the 50% model are typically only commemorative keychains.

70%

The 70% model measures just at about 5CM tall. Due to their small size, Medicom Toy has often focused on creating this model as a form of “lucky charm”

100%

This model is the most commonly produced Bearbricks and was the first to ever be made. Nowadays, the 100% variant are commonly found within blind boxes or paired with a 400% model. These blind boxes are usually part of a “Series”. With the latest being Series 41, at the time of writing.

200%

This is a relatively new variant, and it stands at about 15CM tall. Most of the models found within this category are usually collaborations with other brands.

400%

The 400% is the second most common Bearbrick found in the market. Typically, you would find collectors aiming to get their hands on this model. This is because they are relatively affordable and come in many different models. They measure at a height of 28cm.

1000%

This model is usually reserved for the high-end collectors who have a bit more cash to splash. Standing at a height of 70cm, this model would act more like an exhibition piece.

Nowadays, it feels like you’d find supply and demand for Bearbricks everywhere, there are now much more casual collectors as well as resellers compared to a couple of years ago. And we predict that the Bearbrick market is going to be just as in demand as the Sneaker market soon.

Why are Bearbricks so popular?

Design Variety

Now some of you may be thinking, why would anyone buy the same bear all over again? This is because Medicom Toy carefully designs their Bearbricks to feel familiar yet have diversity. This allows collectors to handpick designs that corresponds with them. As the saying goes “One man’s trash, is another’s treasure”.

Affordable Collector’s Item

Part of the appeal of collecting a Bearbrick is the variety of price points. Depending on your budget, you could start collecting Bearbricks from as low as 10USD per piece. However, it could also go all the way up to six figures per piece. There is truly a Bearbrick for everyone.

Trend

Bearbricks are the talk of the town right now and naturally us humans like to follow trends to be a part of the “squad”. The “Fear of Missing Out” is a huge factor in our current social norm. You wouldn’t wanna miss out while everyone else has one, right?

Profit Opportunities

There is no denying that Bearbricks are a worthy investment when done right and resellers realise this too, there is a good chance that you’d be able to gain a decent flip from selling these sought-after items, considering that they are relatively limited but have solid demand

A downtrend in the Sneaker Market (yes, we’ve called it)

From our perspective, the sneaker market is becoming heavily crowded with resellers, therefore increasing the supply while demand grows at a relatively slow pace. This has led to people turning their attention to find other items to flip on and make some decent money.

Celebrities and Influencers

Nowadays, it is common to spot a Bearbrick in a celebrities’ Instagram post or an influencer’s video and as their fans, we naturally look up to them and would love to follow in their footsteps. If they own one, we must have it too, right?

So, there you have it, you’ve learned all you need to know about Bearbricks right here. In my opinion Bearbricks are going nowhere but up for the forseeable future? Do you agree or disagree? Lets have a discussion!
