1:42 // PART 3
Tracy
Tracy had just gotten out of work and had been battling with her stomach’s vicious growl. She was always so busy that sometimes she would forget to eat until she felt dizzy. Since the beginning of the year Tracy told herself that she would only make food if it was needed. She believed in helping the economy with her fair share of money going to fast food, junk food, and the 42 ounces of soda she bought for eighty cents at the gas station. “Plus, why would I cook for myself, that’ll only remind me of how lonely I am.” she thought.
Tracy bought herself a burrito from the nearby mexican restaurant and headed home. She ate quickly and headed to take a shower. As she was getting dressed a ring of the doorbell surprised her.
“Who is it?” She asked, with a happy tone to her voice.
“Who else you expecting?” The voice responded.
Tracy opened the door and the man braced her with a kiss . Tracy had been seeing this man for quite a while, and this day seemed to be their one year anniversary together.
“I got you something.” The man said.
“Oh Allan, you shouldn’t have.” She replied while extending her hand as if waiting to receive something.
“Look I know it’s a little worn out but I bet you can wear it and make it look new.” Allan noted, as he turned her around. He took out a pearl necklace and placed it on her.
“It’s beautiful,” she remarked, “ how much was this? Now I feel horrible that I didn’t get you anything.”
“I just got it from someone who didn’t need it anymore.”
“Is it from her?” She countered as she took it off and handed it back.
“Oh c’mon she won’t even use it!” He stated.
“Look, take your dumb necklace and your pathetic self and get out!” Tracy exclaimed.
Allan rushed out and slammed the door but left the necklace on the counter.
The next day Tracy called in sick because she felt she had too much on her mind. She grabbed the necklace and began wondering why Allan had chosen to give it to her and not to his wife. Why was it that he said that she wouldn’t use it? Tracy knew that Allan was untrustworthy and that he was unloyal but there was something about him that called her attention.
Tracy was not planning on getting out of bed but the sound of the groaning stomach got her up. She wondered if she should just not eat or even worse, eat all she could until she was really sick. As she was driving she suddenly felt sickened and pulled over to the gas station, opened the door and threw up. She was worried.
“Ma’am! Are you ok?” A voice called out.
“Yeah, I’m fine, thanks.” She replied.
“Dang, haven’t they told you not to drink and drive?” He chuckled and helped her back up.
“Ha-ha,” she sarcastically laughed,”you know what, I don’t find that funny. Thanks for helping but shouldn’t you get back to your job?”
“ I don’t work here, but I’ll let you go, when are you due?”
“ EXCUSE ME?”
“ Oh I’m not calling you fat, but you seem to be pregnant, unless you just ate something bad.”
Tracy felt her face get as red as a tomato, and turned her car back on and was about to close the door when the guy said, “ Hey I’m just kidding you know that right?” Tracy smiled and drove off.
She still felt sick but now with all the awkwardness she felt herself more hungry. She stopped at a Diner and got a burger and fries. The thoughts of what she had experienced in the past twelve hours made her feel as if everyone knew her life. Half way thru her breakfast she decided she needed something sweet and left the diner. She drove around and finally reached The Pearl Cafe to get her usual drink.
