I used to be the guy who always wanted to discover new music. Search for it, sample it,.. borrow a mix tape ( yeah, i still have some), rip a CD,.. “hey,do you have a spare flash-drive for me to borrow that song?”.
Well, all of it might not have been legal, but it kept me occupied, energised & drove a part of my mind. It opened my mind to new artists, new friends, spots in the world & on the internet which i called home. I made new friends through it. I even chose a job at one point of time because i wanted to be “closer to the music”. My music collection was my prized possession..period!
But, then.. i started a digital agency with a friend and with that My love for music slowly took a backseat. We’ve managed to grow it well over the last 4 years…and through this period I started getting serious about life & my focuses,.. other things became my points to obsess over at night before i went to sleep like books on management, leadership, finance, etc…And , when it came to music I just downloaded something i liked once in a while off the itunes charts. My musical discovery phase seemed to have ended.
Till yesterday, after a couple of stressful days at work, i sat back and browsed for a new track. A friend had started a blog a while back where he & another guy each put up a track they liked, every day. ( its called www.trackdrops.com , you should check it out). i went on it and listened to a couple of tracks……
I listened to one new track, then another… went from one blog to another to a third… I did it again in the morning, and again at noon. And somehow i feel more fresh & rejuvenated than ever, my mind seems clearer than its been in ages.
Think about it, you are what you are because of the things you love. I wouldnt have learnt organising things to different patterns if i didnt have a music collection to organise, or for that matter the knack of knowing which track to pick for which time or even knowing what a conversation starter should be for different people basis their taste in music…
These things might with age seem like smaller “hobbies” & “obsessions” that can wait while you climb the ladder of your career. Don’t let them go in the name of being focussed, its these things that made you figure your mojo in the first place.
