We Sold Dot Esports to Gamurs
By Nicholas White
I’m delighted to tell you that Daily Dot Media has sold our Esports section to Gamurs.
Gamurs is an up-and-coming company that we’ve come to admire, and one that is focused exclusively on Esports news. They are big and growing quickly. They have a strong revenue engine. I feel confident that Dot Esports is in tremendously capable hands.
This deal is kind of as if The Ringer of Esports joined Bleacher Report. Imagine quick hit news alongside thoughtful analysis of the fastest-growing sport of all time.
Gamurs is keeping Dot Esports’ branding, a testament to the brand we built. We never would have made it this far without the loyalty of a passionate returning audience, either.
With the deal, the Dot Esports’ team of 8 has joined Gamurs. Kevin Morris, the second reporter ever hired at the Dot, will lead the charge as Editor-in-Chief. Kevin and team, we will miss you dearly.
Our archive of coverage was included in the deal and should be fully transitioned to its new owners very soon. News and tips should be directed to Kevin et al. at dotesports.com.
Gamurs is hiring, too. If you are a talented writer with a passion for Esports, write Kevin now. Go work with the very best in the business.
This was an accretive deal and we’re pleased with the outcome. I’m deeply appreciative of the guts and grit that went into making Dot Esports a reality. When we first started, no one in the world was covering Esports seriously.
Dot Esports was a labor of love in the early days, but we thought of it as a strategic asset with huge long-term potential and invested in it as such. We still feel that way about Dot Esports. It is just getting started.
It became increasingly clear however that Dot Esports was its own animal and wanted to be its own title. It has a distinct audience that didn’t cross-pollinate much with the rest of the Daily Dot. Its revenue model is also different, as are its sponsors and advertisers.
This deal allows Dot Esports to take flight. They get to focus on doing one things extraordinarily well, without having to contort their time in service of a broader organizations with distinct goals. A lovable curmudgeon, Kevin will be attending many fewer meetings, and that’s a good thing. He and the team can now focus on doing what they do best.
Selling Dot Esports allows Daily Dot Media to narrow our focus, reinvesting in areas like video and ecommerce. At a media venture like ours the pendulum necessarily swings between eager growth and long-term sustainability. This deal is rare in that it helps us along both vectors.
The Daily Dot’s ultimate goal remains the same. We want the Dot to be around for a very long time. Longevity isn’t particularly common in media today. We aim to serve a large and growing audience for decades, and maybe longer.
Thank you Kevin, Jared, Efren, Saira, Sam, Will, Ian and Callum. You will be missed. You will always be big part of our mission as well as our legacy. Dot Esports blazed a new trail, improved all of our reporting along the way, and now leaves behind it an even better opportunity for us all.
