Skin recovery — Mask sheet series
At first, I intended to write a review of my BB and CC Cream collection. But exams are drawing near (which means that I have to study my ass off) and I accidently found out this miraculous mask, so here again, I am doing another mask review.
I am always obsessed with getting rid of all my blackheads, whiteheads and sebaceous filaments — which exist in almost EVERY pore of my skin — so normally I exfoliate my skin once or twice every week, depending on my skin situation. A few days ago I put on my charcoal pore strip; it was gross as always and harsh as well. After using pore strips, my skin dried out and tightened, causing the flakiness and redness around my nose, cheeks and corners of my mouth. As I am trying out the Kiehl’s day and night oils, I didn’t want to use my holy grail Caudalie Overnight Detox Oil to calm my skin. Besides, there are more than 10 mask flavours from My Beauty Diary that I haven’t put to the test yet.
This time I tested the Sun Moon Lake Black Tea Soothing Moisturizing Mask from MBD’s limited collaboration with Aiko Fukawa. Packaging is completely different from the normal ones, more like a square with a lovely feminine cat picnicking on the lake. To be honest, I bought this mainly because of its dreamlike name and the drawing. Sursprisingly, Sun Moon Lake is indeed a real tourist attraction in Taiwan. There is even a small sketch on the back of the packaging, marking the lake’s location on the Taiwan map.

Price: I bought the whole pack in VN for roughly 10€/7 pieces.
What I expected: Simply its ability to sooth and moisturize the skin, as written on the packaging.
This mask has a faint calming black tea fragrance, same as the smell from a black tea flavoured bubble tea. The sheet comes with a plastic backing as usual; the essence a bit runnier than that of the permanent flavours; eye holes are slightly smaller but the width is increased — it almost covered my jawline.
The mask gives off a somewhat cooling effect as it glides on my skin — I find it relaxing, calming and soothing right away. I’ve got the feeling that the fabric is more delicate, which, in my opinion, is because of the Multi-SilkTM Technology.
According to the manufacturer, Multi-SilkTM “promotes soft and silky skin tone while providing powerful nourishment and hydration” for it is enriched with silk amino acids, silk peptide and silk fibroin compound.
After 30 minutes, I took off the mask, gently tapping my face for around 30 secs to 1 minute for thorough absorption, and finished with Midnight Recovery Concentrate from Kiehl’s (review coming soon). The next morning, I noticed that there was a thin layer of oil on my face. However, it is not that greasy oily veil I used to have before doing skin care; there wasn’t a single trace of redness/flakiness left, my skin felt supple and soft as a baby’s butt.
The only problem is I’m using a pretty gentle cleanser, which is not really able to wash away the excess oil completely. So I decided to wipe the oil layer off firstly with a cotton pad saturated with micellar cleansing water and then continue cleansing as usual. Simple as that! My complexion looks clearly brighter, more healthy and really well-hydrated.
I’ve tried at least 4 flavours of MBD before (Imperial’s Bird Nest, Squalene Restorative, Sahara Scenedesmus Oil Balacing and the Chinese version of Hyaluronic Acid), but none of them gave me this totally convincing feeling. Repurchase? Yes, if they are still available on the market.
That’s it. Happy reading and see you soon!
