Getting used to sweat in Miami

Even if it’s winter, Miami will always offer you many possible ways to get your detox fix, the sporty way.

Sweat is a natural response to heat, designed for cooling the body. So let’s welcome the much needed sweat to deal with Miami record-high temperature. While on my journey to embrace the sweat, I’ve tried a couple of activities that are cheap or free and pretty priceless for this city:

Yoga sessions at the beach

As in with your feet in the sand a few feet from the waves of South Beach. This yoga classes are already a Miami Beach institution but aren’t too popular yet, so it can still be a quiet and calm practice if you want to join, no matter if you’re a newbie or a fan. You pay with a voluntary donation so it can be pretty affordable (from $5). There are two sessions daily, 365 days a year: 7am and 6pm (check their website for details). The morning one is my favorite, I like to arrive just in time to see the sunrise too. Priceless flow.

Lush bicycle rides

Did Miami welcome you with great (aka, not infernal) weather? Get on a bike and pedal away, through beautiful landscapes if you go to Key Biscayne or Shark Valley or, if you stay on the Art Deco District, the famous architecture of Miami Beach. You can rent the Citi Bank public bikes, I find it’s a cheaper option (check pricing here) if you don’t mind the heavy urban-style bikes. If you’re more about light sporty biking, check this list with awesome trails to explore.

Paddle Board by the bay

Before coming to Miami I had never tried paddle board before. And now I’m totally hooked. I started renting with a cheap Groupon deal ($10 per hour) and was blown away by how easy it was. Of course, I’ve done it mainly in the bay or canals that are between Miami and the Beach, which means it’s much easier than going out to the coast. Anyway, my arms feel the burn just the same. And I won’t forget seeing Downtown’s 4th of july fireworks from the water while sitting on my board, feeling like a local.

Open water swim (if you can)

Talking about water sports, if you have stamina and can actually swim (you know, not just for pool party survival) this is a pretty cool thing. But there’s not such thing as a solo swim here: you can see fish, stingrays and turtles (and, let’s face it: sharks too). There’s also a coach that has a free session every sunday AM in South Beach, so send him a DM on Instagram if you’re interested.

Run, swim or swing at the Flamingo Park

I love my neighborhood, and one of the main reasons is because I live just next to this huge, super complete sports and fitness complex known as Flamingo park. I’d recommend you try the pool if you like lap swimming (and open water is too much for ya). Or go to the Tennis courts, which are top class quality and have a free wall if you’re playing solo. Or if you prefer a good ol’ run, there’s a great running track around the football stadium, where many pro athletes train along the newbies.

Salsa dance

Oh, you can also get a serious sweat with this one. If you’re new to Salsa dancing (or any dancing for that matter) but would want to learn, there’s many classes for a quick fix. Take your moves to any place in Calle 8 for a cuban-style salsa party, I personally enjoy Ball & Chain when the Palo! group is playing.
