Dakota Timm — Tips For Traveling Green In 2020

People can reduce their negative impact on the environment when traveling locally and abroad. Beyond following common green travel recommendations, such as investing in reusable metal water bottles and recycling whenever and wherever possible, most people can easily do the following to travel green in 2020:

Skip Big Hotels and Resorts

Many top establishments are run by companies that don’t care about greenhouse gas emissions, energy waste or overflowing landfills. Although travelers can find destinations that have been constructed primarily with environmentally friendly, recycled materials or that have renewable energy sources and recycling programs, they can truly travel green by picking smaller establishments. Owners of inns, bed, and breakfasts, cottages, lodges and heritage farms often care about green investments and power and waste reduction because it saves them money. They also produce less waste because they have fewer guests. If a large establishment is the only option, then travelers should ask representatives and travel agencies about green practices before picking a location. Travelers should also consider investing in a mobile tiny home or hybrid or electric RV.

Choose Eco-Friendly Travel Methods

Commercial airplanes have a high carbon footprint because they use a lot of fuel to take off and land . Traditional vehicles, especially SUVs, buses, vans, and trucks, use a lot of fuel as well and produce toxic fumes. Greener and safer transportation options include trains, small, hybrid or total-electric cars and boats. If a traveler must use a plane, they can impact the environment less by taking non-stop flights or using small planes for short distances and then transferring to other forms of environmentally friendly transportation. When traveling near home or vacationing in areas that offer public bus transportation, travelers should consider walking or using manual bicycles, scooters, streetcars or small, hybrid and electric rental cars and taxis.

Buy and Invest in Local Offerings

Lastly, when people import items like food, raw materials, and products from non-local areas, they harm the environment because of the widespread use of fossil fuels in the transportation industry. People create more greenhouse gas emissions when transporting produce from a farm in one country to another than when transporting fruits and vegetables grown on local farms to local merchants. As a result, travelers can almost always guarantee that they’re impacting the environment in a less negative way when they buy locally produced or sourced items, such as restaurant dishes that require ingredients that can only be found locally and souvenirs made of local raw materials.
