Interesting thoughts Ceci Stallsmith . Am not sure if messaging is a platform or an element which might/can drive platforms.

Messaging is probably the oldest form of communications, even before language. Viewed from that lens, it is a silent Messaging layer on top of which other platforms are build. The other platforms mentioned by you (Internet/ Phones) then seem like manifestations of different forms of messaging. Another way to state this could be that Internet pivoted from information-based model (Websites/News/Wikipedia) to an exchange-based model i.e. messaging (Social networks, Uber, AirBnB etc.)

Continuing in the same vein, I jotted few thoughts around Messaging (do read and let me know if it coincides with your platform thoughts) and came up with certain features of Messaging which shaped the kind of platform which gets built on top of it:
1. A degree of “Chat-ness” between users of the platform
2. A degree of “Control” between users of the platform
3. The degree of “Consistency” which exists between (1.) and (2.) to determine the nature of the messaging platform.

The interplay of the three points above could be interpreted as shaping not just Messaging platforms but all messaging in general. So the question comes back — which is the next platform which enables messaging in the best possible manner.
