Homelessness in Maryland and a Plan to #DOTheRightThing about it this Fall

#SOCKTOBERFEST

Currently, an estimated 8,392 persons are experiencing homelessness in Maryland and Washington DC (according to Maryland’s Interagency Council on Homelessness). 1,720 of the homeless population is under the age of 18, and 5,210 of them are over the age of 24. 61% are male, 38.95% are female, and .05% are transgender. There are 4,389 singles and 2,556 families. 8.75% of the homeless population in Maryland are veterans, 474 are unaccompanied youth, and 10% are victims of domestic violence. 58% are African-American, 34% are White, and 8% are Latino/Other. All of these numbers are factual and have been provided by Maryland’s Interagency Council on Homelessness (https://health.maryland.gov/mhhd/Documents/2016%20Annual%20Report%20on%20Homelessness%2010.13.16.pdf).

Socks are the most requested item in shelters across the country. Due to the shortage of socks, the nation’s homeless population is constantly at risk of serious foot disease and, during winter months, severe danger posed by the cold. Deaths of the homeless have increased 57% since 2007 alone. This is where the community can have a huge impact.

We have set a goal to generate 2500 pair of new socks and we hope you or your Organization are able to make a contribution. Your generosity will help make a difference in our community allowing us to help others. With your help, the. American Diversity Group Community Network can make the smallest acts of kindness go a very long way. We are requesting you participate as a donor and/or drop-off location. Are you interested in partnering in this community sock drive?

If so, shoot an email to the American Diversity Group at Amdivgroup@gmail.com. Let’s work.
