When we see, imagine or remember danger with enough emotion, the body responds as if it is being attacked in the present moment. The nervous system kicks us into ‘fight or flight’ even if there is no current threat. Our body reacts as if ‘There is a bear in the room!’ and in order to get away from that bear, our body shifts priorities and effectively shuts down any capacity we have to heal. It is only when our conscious mind gets the message that ‘The bear is gone!’ that we can return our body to an optimal state where healing can happen.
What if your conscious mind never got the message?
If you’re wondering if you have a bear in your room, you do. We all do! ‘Bears’ are the things that affect the balance of our bodies’ energy. Many things can affect us in this way, the biggest two being past emotional issues and current choices.
Think of physical trauma (e.g. a car accident) and emotional turmoil (e.g. the passing of a loved one) as bears. When the bear turns up, we go into ‘fight or flight’: our heart rate increases, muscles tighten, blood pressure rises, digestion and healing shut down. Normally when the bear leaves, our conscious mind gets information from our nervous system telling us that we are safe and our system returns to its natural state.
If a bear is big enough or multiple bears turn up at the same time, it’s like hitting all the keys on your keyboard at once: Our system ‘jams’. We get stuck in DANGER physiology. When this happens, the bears may well leave, but our body never gets the message. Can you imagine trying to sleep, eat and relax with your body trying to run from bears? It’s no wonder our bodies start to break down and we seem plagued with ‘bad luck’. Body Psychology opens the communication back up to allow the message through so that healing can start to happen again.
I invite you to take a minute to think about all the ‘bears’ that might be stuck in your subconscious. All those things that happened that you think shouldn’t have. How wonderful would it be to have a new perspective on those things and even better stop them from negatively affecting your health!
