You might recall that a generation ago, Appalachia was pretty solidly Democratic, except for the”Mountain Republicans,” who were generally liberal and whose political identity was left over from the Civil War.

So why is it firmly Republican now?

Basically because of the contempt for working people and Southerners the national Democrats exude, along with the Democratic hostility to Christianity, which is the majority religion there.

In fact, Democrats might ask themselves why they have almost no institutional power left in the US even though polls show that most people agree with them on issues, and they have what should be a demographic advantage.
