Why I’m Selfish with My Time
I look back over how many years I’ve been in business for myself and then I look over my profits… Silent… Pause:) Many entrepreneurs work their britches off and don’t have much to show for it. Year-end, is a great time to re-evaluate how you’re handling your business and make sure that your business activities are adding up to dividends.
Why I’m selfish with my time? My answer is simple: it’s mine and I need to make the most of every moment. With 3 kids, husband, other family members, house to clean, keeping myself balanced and healthy, (small) circle of friends and my businesses, I absolutely must keep the ship tight and organized. I don’t have time for people or activities that will swallow my time and sabotage my success.
I don’t say any of this out of pure selfishness. I’ve got big shoes to step into every morning and I do what I do with purpose. My business success is important to me because I’ve got dreams that I work hard to turn into realities. I’m working to retire my husband so that he can run his businesses full-time, show my children what it’s like to not be slave to bills and assist plenty of others that I believe I’m destined to help along the way.
Do you find yourself spending loads of time helping others for free? Do you spend hours handing out free advice, answering free phone calls or responding to an exhausting number of messages? Do you find yourself discounting your time? Do you value your time and know your worth? There will be plenty of opportunities where we’ll be moved to act out of generosity. Don’t get me wrong, I love to freely give and I’m convinced that giving is a positive action.
This post isn’t about being selfish at heart, and Im not encouraging anyone to even withhold charity. It’s more about refusing to allow others to put a discount on your value. For example: I used to offer free consultations in my inbox and over the phone, not realizing how much of my time was being wasted. I felt exhausted afterwards and sucked dry. Free consultations at times lead to paid clients, but I really needed to re-evaluate how I was spending my time.
In my business, I give away loads of free value. I’m sure you give away plenty of valuable information too. This information provided is available to anyone who wishes to retain what I teach and apply. When it comes to consultations and one-on-one time, I’ve learned to be a very protective and guard my time. If we aren’t careful, our kindness can be taken for weakness and discounting our time will come back to bite us in the form of burnout and a huge loss in business profits.
Here are 3 Tips that Can Help You Be More Protective Over Your Time & Increase Profits:
1. Set Guidelines: How can we expect others to respect our time when we don’t have Guidelines in place. Set office hours and stick to them, answer messages between certain hours and decide how much content and which services you will make available for free of charge. Make a deal with yourself before you begin speaking with potential clients. Avoid coming up with guidelines on the fly.
2. Redirect: If anyone attempts to go around your business policies or office hours, don’t be afraid to redirect and kindly remind them of what you’ve set in place.
3. Say “No”: if you’re anything like me, you have a true desire to help everyone and see everyone win. However, at the the end of the day, if you want to be successful, you’ll have to collect payment for your hard work. There will be some people you’ll have to turn away. I’ve learned to get acquainted with using the word “NO” more often.
