People Watching 3 — “28 to Make”

28 to make is a creativity challenge from CreativeLive. Participants create and share a quick sketch every day for 28 days. I’m doing the same but with words.

Each day in February, I’ll set a timer for 20 minutes and write a “sketch” inspired by the prompt for the day.

Day 20: People watching

It’s people watching time again. Last week, I wrote down 35 things I saw. Here are 25 things I heard today:

  1. Crunchy rice cakes.
  2. A creaking desk chair.
  3. A crinkling plastic bag.
  4. An uneven table leg tapping on the floor.
  5. Snow, creaking — but not in the same way the desk chair was creaking — under my boots. I had missed that sound.
  6. A blender revving ’til it smelled like its motor was burning up.
  7. A fountain pen moving across the page with a whispering sound.
  8. Tinnitus, thankfully not all the time.
  9. A voice I‘m more than a little fond of.
  10. My own mispronunciations in French.
  11. Zippers of the jacket and backpack sort.
  12. the espresso pot gurgling, ready.
  13. towels thumping in the dryer.
  14. Melting snow dripping from the roof.
  15. Distant surf.
  16. Vice’s podcast on El Chapo.
  17. Mötley Crüe.
  18. The alarm reminding me to shut the fridge.
  19. The morning news on TV because I’m home and my family starts their day like that.
  20. A snowplow: also crunchy but not like rice cakes.
  21. My camera’s shutter.
  22. Tummy growling before rice cakes.
  23. My external hard drive doing it’s thing, like it’s about to take off.
  24. Footsteps after I slept in.
  25. The timer going off.
I saw this truck that once belonged to a skydiving school on a walk yesterday.
