Best ways to use a digital scale

A digital scale is the answer to all your weight problems. Looking at several other types of kitchen scales, like the mechanical, balance and the digital scale. The kitchen digital scale as advantage over other types of scale and this advantage is precision. Don’t get it wrong! Am not voting every other type of scale out. Of course! The mechanical scale is a good scale as well and is even preferred in some occasions but it could be less accurate than a digital scale.

Digital scale is a compulsory necessity in the kitchen except if you would be using volumetric measurements. And we all know this is a wrong way of measuring large amount of substance that are not liquid. Volumetric measurement is actually not bad but it’s an inaccurate way of measuring the mass of our kitchen substance.

For example, if a cup of flour is measured with a tin or plastic, assume the flour is measured in five different portions. It is proven that the weight of the portions will differ. The difference is dependent on the angle of measurement, the scoop, and the shape of the cup. But when this flour is measured with a digital scale the measurement will be accurate no matter the angle used to pour the flour. Another advantage of the digital scale is that it reduces the mess in your kitchen and gives you the correct serving size for the food you eat.

This post contains a step by step guide on using the digital kitchen scale effectively and a few expert opinion on the digital scale.

How to use a digital kitchen scale

First step

The first thing to do while using your digital scale or any other scale you are using is to “set the scale to zero”. On a digital scale, this is a simple as turning the scale on and wait for the display register or simply hit the “On/Clear” button. While on a mechanical scale you might need to turn the knob back to zero mark.

Second step

After setting you scale to zero, the next thing you should do is weigh your container. When you place your empty container on the zeroed digital scale, record the measured weight. The recorded weight measured from the empty container will subtracted from the measured weight when food is added to the container. Some scales come with a container and as a button that accounts for the weight of the container. But if your digital scale does not come with a container, no problem just follow the procedure above. For those using a mechanical scale you can follow this procedure as well or you can place the container on the scale and turn the knob back to zero.

Note: For convenience, you can record the weight of the container underneath it with a marker. This will help not to start these procedure again when you want to measure another day.
