So far, my CO-OP experience has given me the opportunity to meet likeminded individuals who strive to reach their passion and goals. The diversity offered in my CO-OP space has been a unique opportunity, seeing different genders and ethnicities working together truly gives me a wider positive view to the business/entrepreneurial world. Working as a CO-OP student in StartUp Garage has allowed me to see and feel the behind the scenes of a startup, the challenges that it constantly faces, and the epiphanies that teamwork leads too.
In the month of June, I attended multiple accelerators and pitching events. I was able to network and grow out of my comfort zone. Participating in these events gave me a better insight on the different ideas and concepts that are being developed and implemented. It was a privilege to be in a room with creative minds! I was most excited to connect with the women and POC who made it all the way here, and relate to their journey and learn from them. It was important to me see other women at these events which something I always had my eye out for. Given, I would have loved to see more inclusivity when it came to the diversity of the events I attended, but it was something I was excited to be a part of.
At StartUp Garage, I am able to speak and to learn from people from different backgrounds and to see the strong women in the room lead their on companies and build their foundations here. It is important that everyone has an equal chance at success and I believe that more programs should be more inclusive on this situation as StartUp Garage.
On Canada Day, I was given the chance to speak at an event hosted by the YLC x Sistertalk group here in Ottawa. It was honour to be on a panel with Black, Latina, and Indigenous women who have successfully paved their own way and have broken down any barriers. It was amazing to listen to their stories and to share my story as a Muslim and Middle Eastern women in todays day and age.
Being a part of Thawrih, StartUp Garage and the RBC CO-OP Program has opened my eyes to the different difficulties companies face on a daily basis. I’m once again very grateful for this opportunity and hope to be keep getting inspired by more WOC throughout my entrepreneurial journey.
