Accepting Change
As humans we like routine and dislike change. We want to know what to expect on a daily basis. When something interrupts this it becomes uncomfortable and we try and resist any kind of change. We dislike it because it feels different, it is something outside of our comfort zone, and it is counter to what we are used to.
One major reason why we dislike change so much is that, for the most part, all change involves some sort of loss. When we break up with someone, we have lost a friend and a lover. If we have lost our job, we have lost a work family and our job security. These of course are major changes, but even smaller subtle changes involve some element of loss if you think about it. We grieve for the routine or the familiarity we used to have.
What we fail to recognize is that change also involves a gain of some sort, but we just can’t see it yet. It is easy to feel that something is gone, but it’s hard to acknowledge that with that something else will be coming our way. We need to change our attitudes towards change and understand that while we may have lost something, and as the adage goes, the hardest changes are usually the best for us, something good again is coming our way. We just have to have an open mind about it. It is okay to miss what’s gone, but get excited about what’s around the corner.
