The History of Windermere Florida

Curious about Windermere History? Let’s start with Florida. Florida Began to ultimately evolve into what today we know as Florida in 1819. In 1819 the Adams-Onis treaty was signed and was ultimately ratified in 1821. This treaty is often referred to as the Florida Purchase treaty. A much better deal than The Louisiana Purchase Treaty in 1803 which the Unites states used to claim Western portions of Florida. Florida ultimately became the 27th State in 1845.

Because the lack of accurate press and lack of foreknowledge a lot of history is left to be told by the benefactors of it. No one truly knows how Windermere received it’s name but it is likely to have come from a gentlemen named Dr. Stanley Scott. Dr Scott’s father has purchased 160 acres in the area and his son settled on the shores Lake Butler.

Lake Butler is beautiful but we have no mountains, it definitely is not the largest lake in Florida, it does not get freezing cold here and actually I think Lake Blanche is deeper. Here is the reason it may be likely. Mere actually translates to broad body of shallow water. So maybe Lake Windermere in England was inappropriately named.

The Heraldic Symbology or Shield has been adopted by Windermere. You will see this hanging on light poles in throughout Windermere. Clockwise from the upper left you see 3 Windermere Class Yachts, Top right you see an ancient gate symbol for gateway to the lakes, lower right 3 fish known as Char which are caught in Lake Windermere in England and lower left the Flag of St. George.

Here are some historical places you can visit in Windermere Florida.

Above is the oldest Schoolhouse in Windermere. Of course some restoration has been done but I am sure in its’ hey day it looked very similar and the community was excited. A far cry from Windermere High School which is nearing completion as I write this. Many a story will be written by its’ graduates in the future. None of which would have happened without this humble yet oh so important part of our history.

A little bit of war history is required here. During World War 1 1914–1918 the ladies of Windermere Would get together to sew surgical dressings for wounded soldiers. Their meetings led to what was known as the Windermere’s Women’s Club in 1927. The building they used was later to become Town Hall. Windermere was incorporated back in 1925 with a thriving population of approximately 200 people.
