A short list of family law questions asked on Reddit’s UK Legal Advice sub-reddit.
Reddit is a discussion forum website. It is organised into “sub-reddits” — forums with a specific interest. All sub-reddits and reddit users have to follow the main site rules, but sub-reddits can impose their own rules on top. One of these sub-reddits is /r/LegalAdviceUK where people can seek advice from random Internet strangers about stuff that’s going on in their life.
Here’s a very short, incomplete, list of questions asked in /r/LegalAdviceUK that fit roughly into family law. Every single one of these questions would benefit from good quality mediation, and most of them would need the calm advice of a family lawyer. Some of these questions appear to lose sight of the child, and don’t seem to have the child’s best interest at heart. The advice they get from random Internet strangers is variable. Most answers do not refer to case decisions. Many answers do not recommend getting legal advice.
Reading these questions, and the poor quality advice provided, makes me really worry for the children involved. Access to family law is important. Politicians keep saying that more needs to be done to protect mental health of children — here’s something they can actually do: Properly fund mediation and access to family law.
