Cuts to benefits for people claiming ESA in WRAG.

Employment and Support Allowance is a complicated benefit. There’s the support group (you’re seen as too disabled to be able to work) and the work related activity group (you’re seen as having a disability related need but you could work with support). There’s the first year which is contributions based (how much National Insurance have you paid?) and then it moves to an income related basis (do you have enough to live on?)

MPs want to cut the amount of money people claiming ESA in the WRAG get by £30 a week.

Most people claiming ESA in the WRAG will also be claiming council tax allowance and housing benefit.

Housing benefit is an income related benefit. If my ESA is reduced my HB will increase.

So it seems that MPs are just dumping extra cost onto councils, and not saving any actual money.

Perhaps they’re saying that ESA will be cut and HB will not increase to compensate. But that will i) definitely, unequivocally, increase deaths by suicide and ii) increase amount of people who are homeless or vulnerably housed.

My rent is much lower than the Local Housing Allowance rates for my area. And I live modestly — I don’t have a tv, I don’t smoke, I don’t have a car, I don’t drink, I don’t go out much, I don’t have broadband Internet, I’ve switched my energy supplier. But if I lose £30 per week I’m going to struggle to live. I genuinely don’t know what else to save money on.
