My Open Letter to Conservatives

As much as I appreciate this piece, there is one section I can’t get past:

“ Conservatism is about trying to show understanding and compassion without requiring the Government to force us to.”

“It is about lifting people up, not lowering the bar so that they can get over it.”

Are there any prominent American conservatives who embody these ideals? Or not so prominent ones? (Beyond the lip service of saying “compassionate conservatism” — actions, not words.)
