Yesterday a friend pointed out a serious issue that I’d never considered.
Snapchat has users under the age of 18. We can be sure that at least some of those users have sent nude photos to each other, given that this was how the platform was originally branded. Snapchat saves user photos.
Is Snapchat not guilty of harboring child pornography? Is Facebook?
And if we reflect for a moment about what is most revolting about maintaining a database of personal photos of minors, do we not also arrive at the same conclusion in regard to the rest of the intimate data they’re holding?
Snapchat, Facebook, Google; these companies deal in information about minors: their most personal communications, images, interests, questions, concerns. No child has the wherewithal to sign away rights to their private data. Surely this is criminal.
