How should I configure my eero network?

A quick overview

Customers often have questions about how to configure their eero networks. Network configuration — or topology — refers to the arrangement of various devices in relation to each other. That includes your modem, eeros, additional routers, Ethernet switches, and the connected devices that sit on top of your network — your computers, phones, tablets, TVs, and more. Properly configuring your network is a critical step in setting up and optimizing your eero system.

While the specifics of everyone’s network are different, here are some tips to help ensure your network is optimized for the best performance:

Using a switch

A switch enables you to connect multiple devices to your network over Ethernet. While each eero has two Ethernet ports, you may need additional ports, or want to consolidate all of your Ethernet connections to one location. We recommend the TP-Link 8 Port Gigabit Desktop Switch for its cost, size, and quality.

When incorporating a switch into your eero network, it’s important to place it in the correct order to ensure that your network functions properly. Your primary eero needs to be connected before, or upstream of, your switch, because it needs a direct connection to the Internet through your modem. Then, you can add a switch to provide wired Internet connections to additional eeros and subsequent devices.

Wired and wireless eeros

If your home is wired for Ethernet, hardwiring each (or some) of your eeros is always an option. While wiring your entire network isn’t necessary with eero, it may help increase the speed and strength of the signal throughout your home. Wired connections are always faster than wireless links because they can transmit more data and are less susceptible to interference. But as long as you have that first wired connection established — the one from your modem to your primary eero — you can mix and match wired and wireless connections throughout the rest of your network.

If you’re not able to hardwire each eero, don’t worry! eeros are designed to deliver strong, stable WiFi connection in any setup configuration. Unlike other routers, eero has built-in software that automatically finds the fastest way to route WiFi traffic throughout your home.

Every network is unique, and there are hundreds, if not thousands, of different configurations that can exist. If you’d like help with your specific setup, just give us a call at 1–877–659–2347 or email us at support@eero.com. We’re here to help you (con)figure it out.

Thanks,
