I hate reality television but it’s a fact of life in my house since my girlfriend is obssessed. Therefore, I have decided to make the best of it. Here are a few reality shows I have actually learned from:

  • Restaurant Impossible (Food Network) - Restauranteur and Chef Robert Irvine helps failing restaurant owners get their shit together. His whole schtick is understanding accounting basics - P&L, COGS, etc.
  • Million Dollar Listing (Bravo)- This show follows 3 animated real estate brokers in NYC who chase huge deals. It’s good for seeing how highly successful sales people are motivated and for analyzing negotiation tactics.

Here is a 2 minute clip in which one of the brokers enlists his entire firm to help him find a buyer for an apartment.

And here is a 6 minute vine in which another one of the brokers celebrates closing a deal.
  • Restaurant Stakeout (Food Network) - This one is probably the one I’m most ashamed of. Restauranteur Willie Degel spies on employees of a failing restaurant to identify the toxic ones. While I don’t condone that at all,I do like how he emphasizes a strong work ethic and teamwork and that he gives even the most difficult employees a second chance.
