Chrome Extension: Hide Medium

I wrote my first Chrome extension this week. Someone on Designer News submitted a feature request asking to be able to filter Medium articles. Why? Not because he didn’t like Medium—quite the opposite, actually—but because he preferred to visit Medium directly. Having just learned enough jQuery to do this in a bookmarklet, I whipped one up and posted it as a comment reply. I think that was technically the first program I ever shipped.

I wasn’t happy with it, though. I mean, it removed Medium.com posts, but you had to click the bookmarklet every time you wanted to remove the posts. Very inefficient.

So, I wrote a Chrome extension instead.

It took three days, and I had a bit of help from my good friend @primitive_type, but here it is. You can easily toggle it on or off from your browser, and it even reports how many (if any) posts were hidden. It also remembers its on/off state when you close your browser, so you don’t have to turn it on or off every time you open up Chrome.

In the future, I plan on spinning this off into a Hide Anything extension where you can add your own domains. Until then, it’ll just hide Medium, like its name implies.
