Hey, nice write-up of your experience as a director of engineering!
Albert López

Thanks for the response Albert. At ThredUP, we try to stay as lean as possible. While I’m sure we could benefit from having a product owner, we prefer to wear more hats and have fewer chefs in the kitchen. We believe having a multi-faceted skillset not only helps bolster empathy between roles, but also allows us to move faster as there is one less dependency in the project lifecycle chain. For example, I handle a lot of the communication within the engineering organization while our lead engineer measures sprint progress, runs retrospectives, and works with stakeholders to break down projects into smaller tasks. Since they will be ones making everything happen, having engineers & product designers at the source of the context and collaborating with stakeholders is essential in my opinion.
