It seems like people think Patreon is any different from any other platform for getting your art/content to the masses (in that no work is required). It’s not. It’s not a magic bullet, it’s a platform that offers a different way to acquire revenue. It doesn’t matter if your work is up on Amazon, Etsy, Ebay, Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook. The hustle is always the same. You have to work to get people’s money. You have to sell yourself. You have to convince people that what you’re doing is of value to them. That’s an age-old concept. This idea that people should just give you money before you’ve proven yourself and your content as valuable is the real false hope. You’re hoping for a fantasy. I’m not trying to say I don’t get it. I absolutely do. Sometimes getting people to pay a dollar for a book on Amazon is like pulling teeth. It gets tiring. But that doesn’t mean I’m entitled to anyone’s patronage just because it would be nice.
