NBA 2K21 Trailer, Release Date, Cover Athlete, and More Preview Revealed
2K Sports have dominated the basketball gaming market for years, and it won’t change in 2020. In Sony’s PS5 reveal event, we got our first look at NBA 2K21 on PS5. We also got some juicy details for the game, including Trailer, Release Date, Cover Athlete, and more. Let’s now take a look at everything we know so far and hope for in NBA 2K21.
Trailer
We saw NBA 2K21 during the PS5 reveal in June.
It features a very sweaty looking Zion Williamson — building excitement for the next title.
Release Date Info
There is no firm release date for NBA 2K21 yet, but in the Official Reveal Trailer premiering in Sony’s PS5 reveal event, Fall 2020 was shown.

The Cover Athlete Announcement
With Zion Williamson featuring in the teaser, he is the favorite to grace the cover.
Not only was Williamson the featured athlete in the trailer, but in the second video, Simmons says, “man and they got (censored) on the cover?” That sounds like the reaction to seeing The Black Mamba revealed for some sort of legends edition. The Los Angeles Lakers icon lost his life in a helicopter crash in late January 2020, and the whole sporting world went into mourning.
With all of this information, we predict Zion Williamson will be the cover athlete for the Standard Edition of NBA 2K21, and Kobe Bryant will take the cover for the Legend Edition.
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X Release Date
Will NBA 2K21 be a launch title for the next-gen consoles? We still don’t know the answer to that question because the release date for the “next level” NBA 2K21 is listed as Holiday 2020, which is the same non-specific detail given for both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
There is some wiggle room, but all we know is it will be available before the end of the year. However, if you consider the 2020–21 NBA season is set to start on December 1, it makes sense to expect NBA 2K21 on next-gen to be available sometime in November because 2K usually releases their new game weeks ahead of the start of the new season.
The Neighborhood Will Be Renamed
The Neighborhood would be renamed. We don’t know exactly what it will be called, but something that represents an expansion of the concept seems likely. The City, The State, The World?

MyGM is a unique game mode for the NBA 2K series with a lot of potentials. Unfortunately, MyGM in NBA 2K20 picked up a collection of frustrating features and boring mechanics. But with some reshaping, this could be one of the most popular game modes in the series.
Cross-Platform
As we mentioned in our NBA Live preview piece, a feature which would be massive for 2K21 would be the ability to game, either socially or competitively, against users on other platforms.
Epic Games, the developers of our game of the year, Fortnite, revolutionized gaming with their addition of cross-platform gaming, could 2K21 be the start of cross-platform gaming on sports titles?
PS5 to Select People for Preview
Lastly, it appears 2K is setting up select influencers with new PlayStation 5’s so that they can preview NBA 2K21. This will be a major deal as it will likely drive many 2K players to Sony’s console. It will also help to allow for a number of previews of the game prior to release, in accordance with embargoes.
Fighting for sport-sim supremacy
NBA 2K21 will be an important moment in gaming history. It will be one of the biggest games releasing around the time that developer 2K Games fights for exclusive rights to NFL-based sim games. The NFL ended its exclusive license to EA for NFL games, signing a deal with 2K games to make a non-sim game in 2021.
If 2K Games performs well with NBA 2K21 and its upcoming non-sim football game, we could easily see a tectonic shift in the sports game genre.
