I think you are very much correct:
In the shot-term “small conversations”, for simple actions, will tend to be automated. And in the long-term NLP will greatly evolve (it will take time though) and bots will be “apps with context”, that will understand our question with better perspective of what are our conditions and what we’re looking for.
The medium that will be used by a (more) intelligent machine — be it an app, a bot, a VR interface, etc — will vary immensely and that’s very conversation by itself. In my opinion, AI will be like this hidden thing in the cloud, that we will make things smarter, but few people will notice. (Kind of like AWS is for server infrastructure.)
