Great story. My first thought was, “I wonder what the weather was like in Libya and the Mediterranean on or about June 25–30, 2014?” A Google search quickly turned up this report http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4483776/ “Widespread tsunami-like waves of 23–27 June in the Mediterranean and Black Seas generated by high-altitude atmospheric forcing” — which is an interesting phenomenon from a scientific perspective, but absolutely devastating from the perspective of someone looking for a boat at sea during this period. The abstract of the article states, “A series of tsunami-like waves of non-seismic origin struck several southern European countries during the period of 23 to 27 June 2014. The event caused considerable damage from Spain to Ukraine.” This particular information makes me strongly suspect that the boat carrying Segen and Abi, already likely overloaded and riding low in the water, slipped below the waves after being hit and swamped by a 2–3 m high tsunami-like wave in the middle of the sea.
