Learning Procreate is easier than ever, thanks to the amazing assistive features. While garnering to the professionals, procreate is perfect for beginners too. One such feature which makes the procreating experience easy is the drawing guides. The guides ensure that all your drawing lines are perfect.

If you’re a beginner in Procreate and want to know more about drawing guides, then you’ve come to the right place. By following the methods below, you will level up your outlines.

How to turn on the drawing guide in Procreate?

Before getting into details, you must learn how to enable Procreate’s drawing guide. Writing. First, press the “wrench icon” on the top left, and select “Canvas.”

Now, toggle the “Drawing Guide” option.

Now, the selected layer will have the drawing guides.

Types of drawing guides

There are four types of drawing guides. Each guide is useful for different kinds of drawings and designs.

To find the different drawing guides:

1. Press the “Edit Drawing Guide” option below the Drawing Guide.

2. Now you can find all the guides arranged below the canvas

1. 2D grid

2D grids are the most used guidelines out of all. You can use this grid to determine the line placement. So, the outlines will come out the same as the reference. Another way is to use the grid and assisted drawing to draw different structured shapes.

Note: Make sure to turn on the “Assisted Drawing for straight lines .”

You can use the “color slider” on top to change the guide’s color. You’ll also find the Opacity and Thickness slider to adjust the visibility of the lines. And to increase the drawing gridlines, you can use the Grid Size slider.

2. Isometric drawing guide

The Isometric grid consists of many triangle shapes. You can only make diagonal and vertical strokes when it is enabled with Assisted drawing. The guides are perfect for making 3D geometric shapes and structures.

Like the 2D grid, you can change your guide’s color, size, thickness, and opacity in the isometric grid editing tab.

3. Perspective drawing guide

If your illustration or design contains a perceptive element, then this grid will help you.

In most cases, You can use it to add depth to a 2D illustration

Setting and Adjusting the Vanishing Point

If you know anything about perspective, you know about the vanishing point. You can set up to 3 vanishing points in Procreate’s perspective grid.

You can follow the steps below to use to adjust the vanishing points:

1. Tap anywhere on the canvas to set a vanishing point(max 3 points).

2. You can hold and drag around the points until you find a suitable position for your design.

3. Select a vanishing point with a tap and set its colors. Settings different colors can help you identify the lines easily.

4. Finally, you can use the opacity and thickness slider to adjust the lines.

Ensure you’ve enabled the assistive drawing. As you draw a narrow scene, the lines will come together to the vanishing point.

4. Symmetry drawing guide

Sometimes maintaining symmetry in a design can be quite difficult. So, you can use the Symmetry grid to mirror your design from one area to another. There are four types of symmetrical grids.

Head to the Symmetry grid section and tap the “Options” menu. There you’ll find Vertical, Horizontal, Quadrant, and Radical guides. Along with that, you also get the option to enable Assisted Drawing and Rotational Symmetry.

Note: You must turn on the Assisted drawing to use the Symmetry grid.

Vertical

In the Vertical Symmetry grid, the canvas splits into two sections by a vertical line. The line represents the center of the canvas. So, anything you draw on one section gets mirrored in another one in the exact same position.

Horizontal

With Horizontal Symmetry, the canvas splits into two sections by a Horizontal line. Similarly, the line also represents the center of the canvas. So, anything you draw on top gets mirrored on the bottom and vice versa.

Quadrant

As the name sounds, the Quadrant symmetry splits the canvas into four quadrants/segments. Anything you draw on one quadrant gets mirrored in the other three. The center of the canvas is where the vertical and horizontal lines intersect.

Radical

The Radical Symmetry divides your canvas into 8 sections. So, when you draw on one section, the strokes get replicated in other sections. This symmetry will be perfect if you are into intricate designs, especially mandalas.

Applying Rotation Symmetry in Grids

All the stroke you make in the symmetry grid gets mirrored. So it flips anything you draw in the surrounding section. If you want to prevent the mirroring, then you can enable the “Rotational Symmetry” option.

Procreate drawing assist

Grids are just one part of the convenience. If you want to take the guides to the next level, you can enable “Assisted Drawing.” The feature is available next to the grid size option and in the layers.

With Assisted Drawing, you can draw straight and sharp lines according to the grid type. Every time you make any directional stroke, the lines will come out straight.

Note: Only the selected layer will have the assisted drawing. So, if you need the feature in another layer, you must enable the “Assisted drawing” again.

How to turn off Assisted Drawing in Procreate?

If your Procreate assistive drawing won’t turn off, there’s a chance that you might be just turning off the “Drawing Guides.” The guidelines will disappear, but the assistant will still remain. To tackle this problem:

1. first, open the layers panel and tap on the assisted layer.

2. Then, deselect the “Drawing Assist.”

There’s no option to turn off the Drawing guide and assistant simultaneously. So, you need to follow these steps.

Use Procreate Drawing Guide to level up

Guidelines make your task easier in any software; the same goes for Procreate. Moreover, you can customize the grids in Procreate, which is a major pro. Now that you know how to use Procreate drawing guides, you can implement them in your next design or illustration. With just a few simple clicks, you can enable them and take your linework and outlines to the next level!!
