5 Reasons Everyone Should Try Homebrewing

1.The Obvious — Make your own Beer!

The first and most obviously amazing reason is that home brewing allows you the opportunity to make your own beer. That idea alone is cool enough to give it a try. Ever been drinking a beer and thought to yourself “Wouldn’t it be cool if I could make my own beer?” Don’t deny it, having the know-how to make something as amazing as beer should be enough to get you to your nearest home-brew store. Honestly, I shouldn’t even continue this article, but I will anyway for those who need more convincing.

2. New Appreciation

Learning the skill, patience, and creativity it requires to make beer is a great way to appreciate the beer you already enjoy. I certainly enjoy an FCB Chocolate Stout way more after having attempted to brew one myself. Taking a swing at home-brew will give you a perspective on what other brewers are doing and really wow you at how they are able to get such complex flavors out of their beer. Heck, you might even surprise yourself with what you can create!

3. It is a Social Activity

Becoming a home brewer taps you into a social network of home brewers worldwide. Brewers love to talk beer, taste beer, and help each other out with techniques and recipes. Head to http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/ to see what is happening near you. It’s great to have a new hobby, it’s even better to have a new hobby you can enjoy with others. Fort Collins Brewery is holding an AHA Rally in March!

4. Its Affordable Compared to Other (less cool) Hobbies!

Homebrewing, as far as hobbies go, is relatively inexpensive. You can get a home-brew kit for around $20 dollars and you are ready to start! And remember brewing beer is an ART. Take a look at the prices of canvas and oil paint, that’s expensive art! Compare that to the price of beer hops and malt, you will see the clear choice for your buck. Here is a good article from The Simple Dollar with home-brew instructions and a cost breakdown: http://www.thesimpledollar.com/a-walkthrough-and-cost-breakdown-of-brewing-your-own-beer/

5. Mental Health

It is scientifically proven that engaging in a daily activity helps relieve stress, reduce the affects of aging, increase memory, and contribute to an overall better mood. Brewing requires thought, hands-on work, and careful analysis. The regular physical and mental stimulation you will get from home brewing can significantly improve your mental health.
