Spherograph (flattened) of the SS Palto Alto

I used my Spherography Drone to capture this spherographic video of the SS Palo Alto Concrete Ship at Seacliff State Beach, California. A pier extended out to the ship. Storms heavily damaged the pier and its remains were eventually dismantled. Click and drag in the video to pan around. Use Virtual Reality (VR) headgear to fully immerse yourself.

NOTE: On a mobile device — to pan around — you may need to view the video directly in the YouTube app by clicking here.

NOTE: Best viewed setting YouTube quality to 4K.

I flattened the spherographic video into this equirectangular format.

NOTE: At the very end of the video while I was landing my Spherography Drone you will note a group of people off to the right (to my left). I spoke with them afterwards. Several of them were getting Baptized in the ocean.

Concrete Ship History

SS Palo Alto was built by the San Francisco Shipbuilding Company at the U.S. Naval Shipyard in Oakland, California. She was launched on 29 May 1919, too late to see service in the war. Her sister ship was the SS Peralta.

Palo Alto was mothballed in Oakland until 1929, when she was bought by the Seacliff Amusement Corporation and towed to Seacliff State Beach in Aptos, California. A pier was built leading to the ship in 1930, and she was sunk in a few feet in the water so that her keel rested on the bottom. There she was refitted as an amusement ship, with amenities including a dance floor, a swimming pool and a café.

The following is a photograph of the SS Palot Alto at Seacliff circa 1930. The ship has weathered an impressive amount of decay.

Spherography Drone Future

I will be posting more Spherography Drone videos and spherographic still frames as I travel the world lugging my Spherography Drone in my leather backpack.
