Week 7: “What is a framework?”

Another week, another project.

This week there were two choices team project or team challenges. After the enjoyment / despair that I had last week working on a project the answer was simple: Project.

I fully appreciate all that I have learnt in the last 6 weeks, especially the confidence in the unknown and how to solve/ask the right questions to get to where you want to be.

Task this week was to create a ToDo List => Abstract a web framework => build a news summary app. ggez.

This week was simpler than last week, mainly due to familiarity around the technologies being used. This week however, no frameworks. Just js, and much to our detriment, this included no jquery, but who says reinventing all the wheels was a bad idea? We just prefer our organic slightly wonkier wheels.

We decided to kill off the todo list on Tuesday. It was too small of a project to abstract, divide into four and not clash / be able to work on separate isolated components. I like the courage we had to actually do this though, but frameworks are more fun to build.

We spent the rest of the week building Gin and Juice. A web framework that includes custom syntax / custom interpolation and it being built on with pure js modules.

This was a lot of fun. Oh so much fun, combining all of the separate components into a working project was incredible and took 5 minutes to link together.

Alot of the magic relied on promises which are the greatest and the coolest thing that js has to offer so far. An elegant way of capturing ajax requests in a complete manner that covers all bases, success and failures. It gets your code to wait until there is an answer of either yay or nay and then allows your code to deal with the data however you wish.

A lot to work on after this week:

Learning to love react and its ikea like nature

Functional javascript (map/filter/reduce are amazing)

That my todo list keeps growing of topics to learn

Maintaining focus when working with minimal guidance
