The Paradox of working in your passion & what to do about it.

Let me preface this by saying I am at the cusp of turning 30, what used to be considered the mid-life period.

I don’t know what triggered it, maybe it was the endless torrents of people on social media ‘Living the dream’ through their super stylish and high-end programming lives, maybe it was the barrage of youtube videos on how to make 6 figure salaries by learning JS in 5 minutes when you’re 17. Whatever it was, it had driven me into a mini existential crisis, and I felt lost.

I was starting to question my career choices.

I was…

How I leverage my hours to get the most out of my day 🚀

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson rolls out of bed at 4am, slips his trainers on and gets to work.

Elon Musk wakes up around 7am to address his most important emails before carrying on with the rest of his day.

Maybe these approaches will work for you, maybe these morning routines will help you get the best out of your 24 hours, or maybe they won’t.

I hit a point in my career where, in order to progress onto ‘bigger and better things’ in my industry, I needed more skills, more skills than my current role is giving me on a…

Ansible + Python + RPM

Preface / Disclaimer

The following is the result of project driven by need rather than design, therefore treat this more of a programmatic brain dump than a tutorial! (even though it does work!).

What You Will Need

For this to work you will need the following:

ansible, an rpmbuildbuilding environment (Check out my article on how to set this up.) , A unix machine.

note: I used a local and a remote machine for this, the local was my ansible machine & the remote had my rpm build env.

Insert nice developer aesthetic here.

I was recently tasked with turning verified and company approved wordpress plugins into RPM packages in order to better control and document the plugins that we use in productions. The only issue was, I had no idea how to do this, sure I know Linux, and I work inside it everyday but to me RPM packages where things I install with YUM, the idea of creating my own… well… it just never occured.

So I set out to learn how to create these packages, along with how to create my own YUM repo in which to store them (Covered in…

In my current role, a point has come where I need to create RPM packages (I’ll cover this in a seperate article) and add them to our own private & local YUM repository, In order for us to install company approved and checked plugins and tools for use in production.

While this may create some toil initially, it’s a process that I have been able to ‘ansiblize’ fairly easily and now results in a fast, secure & vetted installation of items in our production environment (Websites).

Tools required

In order to create your own local YUM repository you will simply need the…

I wanted to start a brand associated to the sport I love, I knew what I wanted to achieve, I knew my niche and I knew the direction that I wanted to go with it all.

However, I’m am not very clued up on running a business, I don’t know the ins and outs of it, and I certainly didn’t know how I was going to make it all happen while I was working full time and renting with my partner!

So I did what most people would do, I went on youtube and searched “How to start ecommerce UK…

You’ve made it this far, all the way to the much delayed part 2 of my informal Penetration Testing Methodology mini series!

(If you are starting on this part and haven’t read the first part, then go there first dingus!)

In the first part of this series i discussed the many ways in which you can use social engineering to execute recon on your target, from physical methods to a simple google.

This second part is very similar apart from rather than scanning a person or a company, we are now after the information on a specific system WITHIN the…

In this series of articles we will be going through the methodology, techniques and tools used when conducting a penetration test.

Rather than making these articles a concise and regimented list on the definitive ways in which you are to conduct a test, I will be making it more of an informal chat between friends in that I will be discussing the 6 phases, what they mean, how you conduct them and what easily and readily available tools you can use to conduct each phase, whilst keeping it informal and relaxed.

6 Phases of a Pen Test

  1. Reconnaissance
  2. Scanning and Enumeration
  3. Gaining Access
  4. Escalation of Privileges
