Facebook 2018 News Feed
Earlier this month, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, revealed that there is a major change to the news feed in 2018.
Facebook was built to connect people across the world to make everyone closer together.
With over 2 Billion people using Facebook every month, Zuckerberg has done a great job of that.
Facebook is changing the world!
So, what are the changes to the Facebook News Feed?
The Changes
In a nutshell, you will start to see more posts from your friends and family and less content from businesses, brands and less news articles in the Facebook News Feed.
Currently, Facebook optimises your posts depending on the engagement metrics such as “likes”, clicks, comments and shares of posts.
Facebook’s new News Feed algorithm will change considerably. Posts from family and friends will be favoured, and posts from business pages will decrease.
Facebook says that “liking” a post is a less meaningful way signal ranking purposes. Facebook intend to rank posts based on the level to which the post triggers discussion.
A study I saw, I will be honest and say I can’t remember where…might have been on Forbes?? The study estimate that the current average pages reach is approximately 5% for each post. So if you had 1,000 people that like your page, 50 of them are going to see you post.
With the new changes, this will only decrease and will be harder to get the attention.
What this means to you business… Your organic posts will get less engagement and fewer people will even see your posts. Which is a annoying for the smaller businesses with lower budgets.
If you own a small business, can guess what you are thinking, “Is their value in Facebook still?”. In my opinion, 100% YES!
I see this as Facebook making the changes to increase time people spend on the platform. Even though Zuckerberg predicts that Facebook usage will go down, I think the opposite. If you knew, that every time you went on Facebook you would see more of your friends across the world and less businesses trying to sell you things, wouldn’t you spend more time on there?
My Conclusion on the Facebook Changes
I personally think it’s a good thing. And that is coming from a marketer who lives on Facebook. In fact, I think that engagement has been lower on organic posts for the last year; it’s not going to change too much.
What it does mean; you need to be thinking about having a budget for the posts you want to be seen.
Another tip to do is, Start a Facebook group. It’s a place where you can build your own community. If the group is good, then you have a place full of likeminded people.
Do you think these changes are going to “Fix Facebook”? As Zuckerberg says.
I would love to know your thoughts.
Thank you for your time and attention today reading this article.
