Frank Ocean premieres “Provider”
Last night was exciting, especially for a Sunday. We had the 2017 MTV Music Video Awards, as well as the season finale of Game of Thrones. However, this didn’t deter Frank Ocean from hijacking the spotlight and delivering a fresh track during his Beats 1 show, Blonded Radio. Fresh off the 1 year anniversary (last Sunday, 8/21) of his last album, Blonde, Ocean has dropped “Provider”.

The track opens with the former Odd Future member conveying his feelings for a close friend (who he hints may be a lover) in conjunction with smooth jazz keys, withholding percussion for the opening 30 seconds. The rest of the song has Ocean’s signature serene, innocent, simple way of expressing sentiments, utilizing slight auto-tune and shifting vocal effects over a gliding beat. Throughout, the vocalist sprinkles abstract lyrics referencing Japanese Anime, Stanley Kubrick, shoegazers, and more.
Not unlike himself, Ocean has chosen to drop the record at a seemingly unscheduled, unpredictable time. Most recently, we saw him borrowing actor Brad Pitt for an astounding performance art piece during his FYF fest performance in Los Angeles in July. As he continues to grow and experiment as an artist, we await his future work.
