6 Different Types of Mushrooms and Their Uses

There are many different types of mushrooms that exist in the wild. With so many options, the possibilities to use them are endless. They are soft, fat-free, cholesterol-free, and full of vitamins.

They are also very rich in fiber and protein which makes them the best source of protein for vegetarians. And it is no surprise that the craze and hunt for mushrooms are increasing with every passing day.

In this post, we are discussing different types of edible mushrooms such as black trumpet mushrooms, chanterelle mushrooms, and many more. So, let’s have a look at the characteristics of edible wild mushrooms.

1. White Button Mushrooms

White button mushroom is the commonly used mushroom in most of the places. The taste of this mushroom is very mild and it is known as able mushroom, champignon mushroom, and cultivated mushroom. Button mushroom is mostly used as a topping over pizza and also works great in salads and soups.

2. Chanterelle Mushrooms

This is a very popular wild mushroom that is also known as egg mushroom, girolle, and pfifferling. The chanterelle mushrooms have a rich golden color and smell like apricots. Their shape is like a flower or trumpet which is suppressed from the center of the cap. These chanterelle mushrooms are most commonly used in many European cuisines.

3. Portabello Mushrooms

Portabello mushrooms are very commonly used in Italian cuisine mostly to add more richness to the Italian pasta. Portabello mushroom is also known as filed mushroom and open cap mushroom. This type of mushroom has very meaty textures that make it the best substitute for meat lovers. They are generally large in size than other types of mushrooms, mostly as wide as the palm of your hand.

4. Maitake Mushroom

The Maitake mushroom looks like the head of a cabbage which is both cultivated and grows in the wild. Other names of this mushroom are Hen of the Wood, Dancing Mushroom, Sheepshead Mushroom, and Ram’s Head. Maitake mushrooms are very soft and look like feathery caps that give a very earthy aroma.

5. Oyster Mushroom

As the name suggests, these mushrooms are as beautiful and as magnificent as the sea oysters. They are also known by many other different names such as tree oyster, shimeji, abalone mushrooms, and angel’s wings. These are mostly found around the trees in the wild nature. These come in fan-shape and look whitish in color that gives a very aromatic flavor when cooked slowly. These are mostly used in China and Japan for making hot and healthy soups.

6. Black Trumpet Mushroom

Black trumpet mushroom is the most different kind of mushroom as compared to others. As the name tells, these are dark black in color but they give a very fruity and rich flavor. They look like a funnel with edges of the mushroom cap rolled in an outward direction and in a wavy form.

There are many other different types of edible mushrooms as well but everyone must try black trumpet mushrooms and chanterelle mushrooms at least once.
