Research co-authored by Wharton’s Susan Wachter suggests otherwise. Recent years have seen a significant increase in young adults residing with their parents, a trend reminiscent of the Great Depression. Approximately one-quarter of the surge in co-residency between 2000 and 2021 can be attributed to declining housing affordability, compounded by higher unemployment rates and delayed marriage and family formation. The impact of housing affordability is disproportionately felt by minority groups, including Asian, Black, and Hispanic young adults, who are more likely to live with their parents.
