MOCHA, FRAPPE, OR AMERICANO?
How to order a coffee in South East Asia:
After many go around’s at coffee shops here in Cambodia and surrounding countries, I have realized, that ordering from a café/restaurant is the test of your Christianity. Will you be Christ? Yes, it stirs all kinds of sinful emotions in one’s heart. You think they understood you, but then you’re Hot Caramel Latte in small shows up and it’s a Grade Vanilla Mocha Frappe. Yes, this has happened! In this blurb I will share three steps to implement in your ordering process.
1. The first thing to do is to say the drink that you are wanting saying the style of coffee, latte, frappe, cappuccino, etc and then the added flavor, vanilla, caramel etc. And then, after a pause, say it all again 5 more times. Having them repeat the drink back to you 5 more times. Don’t be shy, speak up, and use hand gestures. And also refrain from using accents such as; American, Australian, New Zealand, and European. Best to pretend your Singaporean for the day.
2. Say the size by words but also with pointing to the cup size. This is the best way to clarify what size they decide to upgrade you to.
3. Now this third step looks like it’s not very necessary. But believe me, you do NOT want to skip this one. Clarify between cold or hot!!! Most Asians drink coffee COLD! And if you are a southern western gal’ like me, you like it hot and cozy! So make sure you confirm the temp!
Good luck!!! Also, if you want a plain cup of coffee, you are out of luck! Asia is not the south with the living room café shops and the brew of the day offers. I have learned the best way to do it is to order an Americano but with two espresso shots.
