My updated media scorecard:

Reflection
- I can definitely feel the exhaustion setting in these last two weeks. I am dragging a little bit and struggling with the remaining media scorecard items — the scraps. But it is pushing me to try new things like the StoryCorps app! That is an awesome app — thanks Jasmine Yap for the recommendation!
- My grandma was so excited and honored to be interviewed. It was so sweet seeing her lean into the microphone to speak at first, though the speakers would have picked her up regardless. She was so proud to tell her story. It was really beautiful. As a result of this project, other family members are inspired to do something similar. My uncle and mom want me to interview her again and capture more stories as my uncle video records it. (Media Scorecard!!) It makes me really happy that I, via INTE 5340, have helped inspire my family to capture Grami’s stories and document such rich family history through oral digital storytelling.
- I am really proud of my twitter fiction! In case it is unclear, it is supposed to be my grandmother at 17 years old. I have been writing posts on an invented Twitter handle I created using the information she gave me in the StoryCorps interview as well as tidbits I know about her. It is so fun! I love thinking about what she would have been like on social media when she was a youth. When I asked her permission to create it and write the fiction, she was worried at first that I wanted her to start the account and write the tweets. She said, “I’d be glad to do it but I don’t know how. But I know I can do it if you help me.” I loved her willingness to try and learn a new literacy.
- Last year, my uncle got her an iPhone 4 or 4s which she calls her “smart phone.” She uses the voice to text feature to send texts and emails, though she regularly struggles to get it to work. It tickles her to tell me about how she tried to send me something and accidentally typed something funny or is worried she sent it to the wrong person, etc. It is really neat to see her try though. I want to get her some apps that I think she would like, as now she only checks the news and weather apps. Which ones do you think would be best to introduce her to?
- I am going to buy a Google Cardboard viewer after doing my crit and I can’t wait to bring it to show Grami. She will be blown away by it, I am sure!!
Digital Dialog & Soliloquy
In this week’s reflection, please define Digital Dialog & Soliloquy in your own words. How do these fit in the landscape of Digital Storytelling & Learning?
Digital dialog, in my opinion, is creating a space to communicate in the digital world. Be it on social media, via analysis and critique of digital platforms, or through digital classroom learning, digital dialog brings people together (even if they are not physically in the same room) to talk and share and find their voice. It is the back and forth using different kinds of media to learn and explore together. As with the Digital Nomads Group, digital dialog inspires communication and collaboration in order to unite us. When we tell our digital stories and then talk about them and share with people different from us, we find our commonalities. We are more alike than different. And being different is cool!
Soliloquy is finding one’s voice and then finding the courage to stand up and speak your piece. As we saw with youth on Wattpad, when given the opportunity, young people have a lot to say. They need a platform to be and find themselves. This is the same with people of all ages — everyone just wants to be heard. As with Grami this week, being invited to tell your story is a special thing. It is a great honor.
