Living on the Brink

For well over 2 years now the country and the world has been existing on the brink. According to multiple reports, Americans, particularly our youth have increased their need for mental health medications that help aid in the relief of depression, anxiety, distraction and exhaustion. In the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, Express-Scripts released a report detailing how Americans were “gobbling up” anti-depressants to cope with the stress of living and working in a global health pandemic with little relief in sight. Now, close to three years later, the volatility of these times has left many wondering if adaptation to this new abnormal reality will require more medication, more therapy, and a better way to work. Roughly, 60% of Americans according to Pew Research are still working from home, which is down from 71% at the height of the first wave of Covid. 60% however is a far cry from 23% which was the average before the pandemic. The stress of the day to day doesn’t just rest with the health pandemic which has now expanded from Covid to the announcement by the WHO that Monkey Pox is now a part of the global health emergency list.

It seems that with each new day that arrives, alongside it is another layer of uncertainty. Whether it be another virus to prepare for, another mass shooting to mourn, or another climate crisis that dominates the headlines. This sense of unease was coined languishing at the…
