Let’s talk about amusement parks. There are thousands of amusement parks around the US, and millions of people visit them for fun, entertainment, and even family bonding. And what do all amusement parks, from huge parks, like Walt Disney World and Cedar Point, to smaller ones, like LegoLand and Sesame Place, have in common? WAITING.

You’re probably going to wait in line, especially for those bigger, more popular rides. Even in this day and age, where most theme parks offer some sort of paid add-on line-skipping service, there will be some waiting, even waiting for your lunch. So here are 7 things to do to pass time in lines!

1. TALK TO EACH OTHER

I know, crazy, right? As a native Ohioan, I spent many a summer day in line at Cedar Point with my friends. And, since it was the 90s, we did not have cell phones. HOW DID WE SURVIVE IT?!?! Well, we actually talked to each other. Totally bananas, for sure, but we actually used to do that “back in the day.” Give it a try!

2. PLAY GAMES LIKE “I SPY” OR “WOULD YOU RATHER”

Don’t make it as obvious as Dory, constantly spying Marlin in the ocean, but these sorts of games can be excellent ways to pass the time, when you’re in the middle of a 2-hour line for Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure.

3. HYDRATE!

You’re either in the heat of summer or in a constantly-hot location, so take some time to hydrate. The worst thing that could possibly happen to you is passing out from dehydration after you paid hundreds for one day in *insert theme park of choice here.* Pack a water bottle and keep track of how much water you’re drinking throughout the day. AND THEN REFILL IT!

4. REAPPLY SUNSCREEN AND/OR FRESHEN UP

I never want to be the smelly person at a theme park. That’s why I always have a travel stick of deodorant in my theme park bag. I also pack wipes and facial wipes. Why? Because I sweat like a sow rolling around in the scraps. I like to freshen up.

5. PLAY MOBILE APP GAMES

Many theme parks now have fully integrated apps, that offer their guests planning, wait-time updates, photos, and, in some cases, games based on the theme park. Take advantage of these games while waiting for the attraction, like the Disney Play App!

6. ORDER YOUR NEXT MEAL

Along with mobile games, most amusement parks now offer the ability to mobile order your food. This is one of my favorite things to do in lines at Walt Disney World because you can order your lunch and have it ready when you walk off the ride. This is an AWESOME time-saver. And time is money!

7. PLAN YOUR NEXT ACTIVITY

You’re currently in line, but what do you want to do NEXT? Take the time you’re in line for everyone in your group to talk about what comes next, Then, take votes to decide what it will be. You’re planning together, talking together, and, hopefully, not fighting!

While waiting in line can really suck (let’s not mince words here), there are plenty of ways to make it more enjoyable. What are some ways you like to pass time in lines? Let me know in the comments! And if you’re enjoying what you’re reading, give me some claps below!
