Years ago I transitioned while employed by a well-known US public school. I repeatedly heard from white cis men coworkers how they felt that my presence was so oppressive to them as it somehow made them “walk on eggshells” to not say the wrong thing, etc. They were convinced that one wrong pronoun and they’d be reported.
I think it speaks volumes to their mindset of their privilege being justified that they would view being required to extend basic respects to me in such a light. That view that HR reports would be rampant persisted even after ages of no such reports ever happening, too. The reality didn’t affect their perception of their privilege being impinged.
