Tracking
How to track how we use the internet seems impossible. Just the fact that it’s billions of people that use different parts of the social media/internet everyday is hard to understand, but if we take a look at all the harsh tags you quickly see the entire world in seconds.
To find a way to monitor all the usage of social media and internet in general we would have to insert a chip in every computer, phone, iPad that record what every single user do while at the internet. The problem with this is the privacy of the users. If we take Google as an example, they saves everything you do (search) on google for 10 years. Yes everything, that include the things you where hoping no one would see. Because of this Google have had a lot of people trying to get them to delete their history, but because you are using the browser they have the right to do whatever they see fit with the information they get from it.
A few years a go i did a social media unit where we did competitions on Facebook, twitter, instagram and Pinterest. The goal was simple, get as many followers as possible. We used google analytics to check the hits, but would that be accurate? because of all the internet robots it would be impossible to know what really went on at our sites but at that point we didn’t care, since it was a competition. How we could get the robots away from the social media could be to to add codes that people needed to type inn every fifth hour. With codes I mean look at a photo of a fish an write what the image was. People probably recognized this when streaming and using certain parts of the internet where you have to confirm that you are a human.
When I talk about robots I mean machines that are made for one purpose only, and that is to like everything with a specific harsh tag or comment on tweets where certain words are used.
To summarize I find it very difficult to find a good way to monitor how we spend our time at the internet without breaking any piracy rules. It is probably possible but I would say it is yet to come. With our knowledge and technology it will probably be “invented” really soon. Probably by a huge corporation who could use this information to charge more for advertisers and get filthy rich, so nothing that haven’t already happened.
