Good observation. I agree aesthetically but functionally it fails. Rotating the bezel around your watch as a gesture for zoom is pretty silly. Zoom is all about precision. The defining feature of the digital crown is the precision it gives you on an extremely small device. Rotating a bezel on the other hand seems like it will require more effort as the actual movement is limited due to the odd position you need to put your fingers in. Doing a full rotation would probably require at least 3 movements, while on the Apple Watch you can do it in one movement.
