Control: The World Isn’t Getting Better

It’s getting more advanced. We are getting better at getting from one place to another. Walking was replaced by riding horseback, which was replaced by trains, which was replaced by cars and airplanes. Every time we improved someone made a fortune to make our lives easier.

We are harder to kill by a little. People have eliminated individual diseases. They still haven’t changed human nature, which can be ugly.

People aren’t better. They don’t respect the law very much. Have you broken the law? Probably. Have you been caught speeding or jaywalking or drinking too much and then driving? Possibly.

Racism still exists. It’s just hidden behind masks and the internet. People still kill people because they are different. African-Americans who are poor are targeted and killed by police officers. Some officers do everything right and are ignored and shamed and hated by the rest of them.

I know a cop. At least I think that he’s a cop. I know that he wouldn’t do anything racist or mistreat anyone for any reason.

People are more advanced but not better. People still break the law when it suits them. Alcohol and marijuana were consumed aplenty when they were illegal.

I remember when things were different. People were more open about their homophobia and racism. Racist jokes were common. I heard someone say an offensive joke. The gist of it was that Asian people slur their words and can’t understand English.

I occasionally hear an inappropriate word about gay people that starts with the letter f and is three letters.

Prejudice is still here. And violence? You bet.

I remember when Gilbert and I lived in Pennsylvania someone ran into someone and killed him with his car. It happened right in front of our home. He talked to the police and gave a report and everything.

People eat themselves to death. People invent restaurants which cause people to live shorter lives because the food is so unhealthy. In college we ate “still edible” meat at our dorm food area.

People don’t get better. We are no more advanced than people from a long time ago. I know, I know; we have a representative democracy and that’s better than dictatorships. I agree. The progress seems to be there. At a fundamental level, though, I think that everyone is just as sad and pathetic and full of hate as men and women from three thousand years ago.

I am sorry that the blog post couldn’t be more positive or upbeat. I am sad and worried that the real world isn’t a comforting or good or benevolent place. I have begun to think that the universe is against me.

Thanks, and take care, friends.
