Why conversations seem easier on Whatsapp
You might be saying: I know this one! Whatsapp is easier, because you don`t have to worry about your face. You can talk without the anxiety, amazing let me say stuff to others now!
Or you might still be reading, you probably already have great conversation skills. Whatsapp is easier, because we have the time to reread the words. It`s not the talking that`s easier, it is the listening. In real life, when someone tells you three paragraphs of text, it might be impolite to tell your friend: wait, could you tell me this again? While on Whatsapp you can read the words over and over without anyone noticing. (Until the other sees you have been online for a minute and starts being impatient).
The mindset of an editor
Now here is the honey of today`s story: you can be a Whatsapp level listener in real life. You just need the right mind set. The mindset of an editor. It can be scary to tell someone to stop blabbering, but you should. Make sure that the story that the other is telling is interesting to you. Make sure that you are following your curiosity as you ask your questions, because that is what authentic conversation is.
If you want to start of your editor skillset today, you might have a lot of fun starting on this: make sure the speaker keeps his story short and powerful. If someone is blabbering on, stop that person, not because his story is not interesting, but because you could never remember all of that story. Remember you do not have to remember all of it, sometimes someone just needs to spew out words, it is therefore important to not just simply stop someone, but to steer them in the right direction.
How? By asking questions, of course! If you inquire about the part of the story from the other that you did remember, that person will make a mental note: Ahh! So this is what he finds interesting.
Now the speaking will be a lot easier. I could write a lot more about this, but I would rather have you try this out and hear about what you learned and experienced. Have fun!
