Well, for one. Science is a helluva thing, in that it has proven that the earth is not flat; leprechauns are literally a fiction of man’s imagination, just like Santa Claus and the Easter bunny; and both of these assessments can likewise be used to logically explain why the moon isn’t constructed out of a man-made food from earth.
As in, those assessments are clearly asinine, therefore they are not applicable to this scenario. You can technically have “faith” that Santa exists, but that is viscerally different than having faith in a higher power, of any kind.
In fact, the point of having “faith” is that you believe in something despite there being a certain lack of scientific evidence that it actually exists. In this way, believing in a god and Santa are alike, but that’s about where the similarities end. Whether you find the idea of a god(s) laughably ridiculous or simply questionable, making fun of someone for believing in God is far more personal and mean-spirited than joking about someone’s belief in Santa.
Which, by the way, is exactly what you did. You made an intentionally degrading joke about her belief in God. It was nothing close to a “critique”. If you didn’t want to be overtly offensive to someone you don’t even know, (and in turn wanted your own views to be taken seriously), it wouldn’t have been difficult to write out an actual critique, seeing as there exists many logical critiques of any and all religions, as well as their respective gods.
